About Me

Alan Towns Grad IOSH

I have had a varied career path starting work at an early age on farms, leaving school at the age to 16 to start a traditional apprenticeship in electrical engineering maintenance.

The 4-year apprenticeship included college at the end of the apprenticeship gaining an HNC and EITB qualification. After completing the apprenticeship, I gained promotion to Engineering Supervisor, it was at this time (2002) I started to take an interest in health and safety.

I studied for the NEBOSH general certificate whilst developing safe systems of work and risk assessment for my engineering department to ensure compliance with legislation. During this period I also developed property.

This part of my career spanned over 16 years with the same employer thus enthusiasm for change lead me back to education to study for a degree in Management with HR at The Robert Gordon University. I achieved a 2:1 Honours Degree studied over 3 years (never one to take the easy route).

Upon graduating at the start of the 2008 financial crisis I returned briefly to engineering for gainful employment. By this point I was running my own property business, which I built successfully before being employed in health and safety full time.

In January 2014 I was employed by an engineering and construction company to carry out a fulltime health and safety role in many diverse fields of both engineering and civil engineering. I was in sole charge of safe systems of work, risk assessments, health surveillance requirements, training requirements, , auditing, physical and mental safety at work.

The past five years in a full time, full on, health and safety role has taken me to urban and remote locations.

These include windfarms in the Highlands, a biomass plant and general sites with mixed engineering and civil construction. I have experience in liaising with health and safety managers employed by large contractors such as Balfour Beatty, BAM Nuttall and Network Rail.

The role has also given me extensive experience in preparing audits and negotiating and agreeing risk assessments. Throughout this; I have gained a strong understanding of how clients, contractors and sub-contractors operate and understand one another.

Throughout my career journey I have learned to take a pragmatic approach; looking for solutions that allow work to carry on. My diverse work and business experience will help me understand your business and bespoke Health & Safety requirements to keep you, your business, your employees and others safe and healthy – free from risks.
